The Bathroom Details That Separate Luxury From Ordinary

Written by Sandra Fadayel

Bathrooms look simple on paper.
Tiles. Basin. Mirror. Shower. Done.

In reality, they’re one of the most demanding spaces in a home. They’re used when you’re half-asleep, rushed, sick or vulnerable, preparing for the day, or winding down from it. And that’s exactly why the details matter more here than almost anywhere else.

The Lighting Hierarchy You Need to Know

Lighting’s the first thing I look at. A well-designed bathroom needs layers. Bright, functional light for getting ready, makeup application, grooming. Softer, low-level light for the middle of the night that guides you without shocking your system awake. If you have natural light from a window, even better - it allows just enough lightspill from the street to navigate without flipping switches. That gentle transition between sleep and activity really is a quiet luxury. And ambient, mid-level lighting for the moments in-between.

Storage That Actually Works

Storage is the next detail I see underestimated. Not every mirror needs a cabinet behind it, but every bathroom needs a considered storage strategy. Beauty products, toiletries, linens, toilet paper, laundry. Each needs a different type of storage, and the amount depends on who uses the space and how often. A family bathroom needs a lot more storage than a guest bathroom. A powder room needs less but should still have the essentials (nothing worse than being stuck without backup toilet paper).

Counter Space and the Morning Rush

Nothing breaks the illusion of a calm space faster than clutter with nowhere to go.

When you're getting ready, you don't want to dig through drawers hunting for products. You want your daily essentials accessible and organised. This requires intentional counter space planning - not just whatever's left over after the basin goes in.

The Basin Reality Check

Then there’s proportion and practicality. Sculptural basins look beautiful in a powder room, but they actually need to work in a daily-use bathroom. That means no splashing everywhere when you wash your face, appropriate mounting height, and proportions that make sense for the space. In shared bathrooms, if space allows, separate basins are one of the simplest ways to add comfort and ease.

The Emerging Luxury: Beauty Refrigeration

Here's something I'm seeing more of: refrigerated storage in bathrooms. Clean beauty products, face tools, eye gels, de-puffing treatments - many now need temperature control.

It sounds a bit extra. But since we’re redesigning… and if you're investing in high-end skincare, protecting that investment makes sense. This is the kind of detail that separates thoughtful design from generic luxury.

The Details That Actually Matter

When I was a student (too many years ago!), I was taught “God (or the devil)’s in the details”. And those details extend further than people expect. Toilet seat height, shower fixture placement. Towel bar locations, and how many towels need to dry at once? These aren't glamorous considerations. But they're the difference between a bathroom that looks good in photos and one that supports your actual life.

Powder Rooms: Where You Can Play

Powder rooms are different. They're transient spaces, that guests use briefly and leave.

This is where you can lean into moodier lighting, darker finishes, more sculptural elements. Nobody's doing their makeup or living in this space daily, so you're not bound by the same practical constraints.

These become showcase moments in your home.

In a Nutshell

Bathrooms aren't about following trends or installing the most expensive finishes. They're about understanding how you actually live and designing around that reality.

The luxury’s in the thinking; the layers of consideration that make a space work beautifully at 3am and 3pm, on a random Tuesday and before your biggest presentation.

That's what turns a bathroom from functional to sanctuary.
